The Healing Power of Drumming

Posted by on Apr 29, 2015 in News | Comments Off on The Healing Power of Drumming

Here at Breakwater we believe in the power of drumming to help in all facets of life — that’s why we offer coaching and consulting classes with the option of a drum circle! This article from The Open Mind is spot-on with their points about that healing power. Here is an excerpt:

Drum therapy is an ancient approach that uses rhythm to promote healing and self-expression. From the shamans of Mongolia to the Minianka healers of West Africa, therapeutic rhythm techniques have been used for thousands of years to create and maintain physical, mental, and spiritual health. Current research is now verifying the therapeutic effects of ancient rhythm techniques. Recent research reviews indicate that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system and produces feelings of well-being, a release of emotional trauma, and reintegration of self.

Breakwater Founder Jaye Smith was featured in this new article in Newsday in which Long Islanders share their hearts and experiences abroad. Here is an excerpt:

For some Long Islanders, retirement, sabbaticals or vacations are an opportunity to volunteer, pursue an interest or travel to distant lands. Some manage to accomplish all three by volunteering overseas. “It gives you the advantage of seeing a new culture and new ways of living and looking at the world and an appreciation that the grass is not greener on the other side or, if it is, it can give a new sense of purpose,” said Jaye Smith, 59, a Sag Harbor executive coach and author of “Reboot Your Life: Energize Your Career & Life by Taking a Break.”

Breakwater Founder Jaye Smith was featured in this new article on the NBC News website about the rise of adults taking mid-life gap years, an idea Jaye and her associates at Reboot Partners encourage.

Usually seen as a tradition solely for young people before they start college, adults are wanting in on the growth and renewal that can be gained from “taking a breather from the track that they’re on.”  Of course, those in their mid-life have heavier responsibilities than young people – as always, our advice before taking time off is to start planning early and to build a network of support with family, friends, and colleagues:

“Once you’ve vetted it with the people who support your needs, planning is the No. 1 most important element of the whole process,” says Jaye Smith in the article.
